Description

The European Commission and ESA’s Planetary Defence Office together are organising the “EU-ESA Workshop for the Increase of Emergency Response Agencies Awareness on the NEO Threat”. Near-Earth objects (NEO) are solar system bodies in orbits close to the one of the Earth, which under some circumstances can represent a threat to our societies and to the life on Earth. The workshop will take place at ESA’s European Space Operations Centre (ESOC) in Darmstadt (Germany) on 21-22 November 2023. Attendance in person is foreseen.

The purpose of the meeting is to advance in the level of awareness on Planetary Defence (PD) and preparedness for the NEO threat among the national emergency response centres and civil protection agencies or equivalent institutions. The workshop will address the description of the threat, the international context, ESA’s activities in the field and a dedicated threat response exercise. Please note that the mentioned exercise will hopefully allow that the attendees gain a profound understanding on the PD concepts and the possibility to explore the options available for addressing the threat as well as proposing actions for international cooperation.

Programme of the European Union, implemented by ESA.

Registration for Emergency Response representatives and interested participants is now open. Please, take note that you will be asked to agree to the Privacy Notice below.
