Description

The ESA/ESTEC Structures and Mechanisms Section (TEC-MSM) is pleased to announce the

Workshop on Optical Mechanisms

to be held on 14th March 2018 in the ESTEC Newton Conference Room in Noordwijk, The Netherlands.

The workshop will be followed by the Mechanisms Final Presentation Days 2018, to be held on 15th and 16st March 2018 at the same location.

The workshop aims to facilitate supplier – customer relations by discussing the state-of-the-art in Optical Mechanisms technologies.

Optical Mechanisms are responsible for accurately moving optical elements in space observation instuments and telescope systems. They find application in scanners, mirror tip/tilt and refocusing devices, active/adaptive optics systems, filter/grating wheels, laser pointing for optical communication terminals, instrument calibration units etc.

Special attention will be dedicated to mechanisms accuracy, since accuracy requirements often drive the Optical Mechanisms complexity and costs.

Typical concerns and frequently asked questions will be addressed, as well as innovative approaches.

The workshop will cover the following topics:

  • Accuracy analysis: simulation of high accuracy mechanisms, tolerance analysis approaches, analysis software;
  • Accuracy testing and calibration: verification of accuracy requirements, test facilities for accuracy measurements (OGSE), calibration of optical mechanism;
  • High accuracy guiding: bearings, flexures, compliant mechanisms;
  • High accuracy actuation: high precision motors, gearboxes, sensors and motion control systems;
  • Microvibrations: emitted disturbances, susceptibility, isolation and reduction strategies;
  • Cleanliness and contamination: impact of cleanliness and contamination requirements on mechanism design, selection of lubricants;
  • Accuracy requirements flow-down and understanding: from pointing and image quality requirements to mechanisms specifications;
  • Optical mechanism design development and verification process: development phases, design and development risks and mitigations, test and model verification approaches;

The conclusions of the workshop will be recorded and distributed in the form of an official ESA document which may serve as a reference for future activities. Furthermore, development needs and potential ESA funding goals will be highlighted.

Representatives of the European space community are encouraged to participate in the workshop, which will feature oral presentations (to be selected on the basis of an abstract submission) as well as dedicated splinter meetings. Furthermore, a discussion forum and an optional exhibition of hardware and software items will be available.

The workshop will be followed by the:

Mechanisms Final Presentation Days 2018

which will also take place at ESA/ESTEC - Noordwijk, The Netherlands, Newton room on the 15th and 16th of March 2018.

The ESA Mechanisms section hosts the annual Final Presentation Days to disseminate the results of research and development activities to interested parties from the ESA member states. The Final Presentation Days represent an opportunity to gain a complete overview of recently completed activities, and the possibility to discuss them with colleagues from the space mechanisms community.
