Speaker
Mr
Isidro Munoz
(ESA/ESOC)
Description
ESOC executed its first collision avoidance manoeuvre in 1997, when ERS-1 had a close approach with a defunct Kosmos spacecraft.
Since then, the process for collision risk management and eventually avoidance manoeuvres execution has evolve up to a point where it has become routine for spacecraft in Low Earth Orbit.
The number of escalated events has increased significantly in the recent years following several in orbit breakups and the upcoming mega constellations,
requiring quite some effort since the process is still quite manual and requires the involvement of different teams with different expertise.
The presentation describes the process as it is today in ESOC, including also some statistics and a few remarkable events.
