Description

From In-Orbit Servicing, Clean Space, Planetary Landing (Moon Based Infrastructure) up to Rovers Planetary Exploration will need LIDAR sensors due to it provides essential information to the Guidance, Navigation and Control (GN&C) System. .
The recent developments of new technologies led by the automotive market has enhanced small formats of Imaging LIDAR sensors.
In the framework of an ESA GSTP Program Activity, LIDAX is developing a 3D Scanning Imaging LIDAR for Space Applications.
This project is called SMARTLID3 and is being developed in collaboration with Beamagine based on a solid-state design for the automotive market.
Its space grade version will acquire targets ranging up to 300 m, producing dense 3D point cloud images at real-time framing with high-resolution measurements in all axis.
This presentation will explain the advantages and disadvantages of Time-of-Flight method on Scanning vs Flash Type LIDARs.
Then, it will continue with the status of SMARTLID3 project once a Elegant Breadboard has been successfully approved by ESA.
In addition to its small size and lightweight, this device introduces a novel background light reduction technique that translate in reduced power consumption, better detection performance even in adverse scenarios flooded with solar background light in Orbit or strongly illuminated site at the Moon’s surface.
