Application Domains

The following space application domains are examples where XR technology is already being used or is currently being evaluated:

  • Concurrent Engineering and User-Centred Design
  • Space Systems Manufacturing, Assembly, Integration and Testing
  • Facilities Training, Operations, Remote Supervision and Maintenance
  • Product Assurance and Quality Assurance
  • Spacecraft Flight and Ground Operations
  • Astronaut Training and Operations Support
  • Space modules and ground analogues design support
  • Earth Observation and Space Science Data Exploration

Technical Themes

Presentations should address the latest advances in XR technology and focus on practical use cases and technical challenges in the space domain and in particular on (but not limited to) the application domains listed above. Examples of current technological advancements and challenges are:

  • Combined dynamic and static tracking, including location precision
  • AR/VR authoring environments, including standards for models and procedures input
  • Reduction of the AR/VR scenarios preparation time
  • Development and availability of 3D models
  • Emerging standards for device independent AR presentations
  • Standardisation of AR markers and action symbols across suppliers and devices
  • Flight-proven headsets for use in variable-gravity environments
  • Enhanced immersion and presence through avatars
  • Effective mixed reality through haptics and sound
  • Advances of AI in combination with immersive technology
  • Added value of well-defined and designed UI/UX
  • Interfaces between AR/VR and other systems, how to integrate
  • Common platforms and frameworks dedicated to space applications
  • Stand-alone solutions
  • Hands, face and body tracking
