Description

In recent years, developments in Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) technologies have evolved significantly. In addition, Mixed Reality (MR) solutions have appeared, combining the strengths of both AR and VR. This has led to the overarching term Extended Reality (XR), capturing all combinations of real-world augmentations and virtual-world representations.

Advances in XR technologies have been driven by the computing industry in general and the gaming industry in particular. Applications of XR technologies have been identified in many engineering domains.  In the realm of space exploration, XR technologies have been studied, and various use cases haven been identified across different application domains. At present, XR is already being successfully utilized in several areas, while ongoing efforts continue to enhance the technology for practical implementation in other domains.

The objective of this workshop is to provide a platform for experts involved in the XR technology in the different space application domains, in order to exchange ideas, know-how and achievements. In addition, the workshop will provide a forum where the developers of software tools, hardware devices and complete XR-based solutions can connect with the potential users of the technology, for example with industry involved in the design, manufacturing, assembly, integration and testing of space systems, or with organisations in charge of the operation and exploitation of space missions.

The workshop will be organised jointly by ESA/ESTEC and SCN Avatar, as a two-day event, taking place on 11th and 12th December 2023 at ESTEC in Noordwijk, The Netherlands. Presentations, interactive sessions and live demonstrations are planned, with an opportunity for open discussions. The workshop style will be informal, based on presentations, posters and demonstrations, with no requirement for the submission of complete papers. An exhibition area will be available in close proximity of the workshop area, for demonstration of software tools and hardware devices.
