Over the past years, numerous ESA space missions have been analysed through Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), often across multiple iterations, generating a large volume of valuable environmental data. To enable the extraction of structured and actionable insights from this growing knowledge base, the LCA Project Repository is currently being developed by the Clean Space Office.
The LCA Project Repository presents a data-driven approach for environmental analysis and decision-making, compiling key LCA knowledge from past and ongoing missions. It allows the identification of recurring environmental hotspots and supports their consistent evaluation across projects, enabling the Clean Space Office to support ESA project managers in the early integration of ecodesign solutions and the improvement of space missions' environmental performance, while enhancing the time- and cost-efficiency of the missions.
Continuously updated with results from missions in later phases, it will be the basis of the Ecodesign Lessons Learned Repository, which is an essential tool for the implementation of the ESA Ecodesign Policy. Provided by the ESA Clean Space Office to new missions, it is intended to be consulted in early phases, prior to the Integrated Project Plan Review (IPRev), to support the development of the Ecodesign Implementation Plan (EIP).
The presentation will outline the methodology step by step and the information contained in the tool, with its application to an illustrative mission as a representative use case.
